A positive iron wire with a negative Constantan wire, recommended for reducing atmospheres. The operating range for this alloy combination is 1600°F for the largest wire sizes; smaller wires should operate at correspondingly lower temperatures.
A positive copper wire with a negative Constantan wire, recommended for mildly oxidizing and reducing atmospheres up to 750°F and suitable where moisture is present. Recommended for low temperature work, as wire homogeneity is maintained better than other base metal wires.
A positive Chromel wire with a negative Alumel wire, recommended for clean oxidizing atmospheres. The operating range for this alloy is 2300°F for the largest wire sizes, with smaller wires operating at correspondingly lower temperatures.
Used for temperatures up to 1600°F in a vacuum, inert, mildly oxidizing or reducing atmosphere. At sub-zero temperatures it is not subject to corrosion, and it offers the highest emf output of any standard metallic thermocouple.
Noble-metal combinations of 90% Pt / 10% Rh, 87% Pt / 13% Rh and 70% Pt / 30% Rh against platinum or Pt-6% Rh. High resistance to oxidation and corrosion; recommended operating range 2800°F, with up to 3270°F measurable using Pt-30% Rh vs Pt-6% Rh.
Three tungsten-rhenium types are in common use for measuring temperatures up to 5000°F. These alloys have inherently poor oxidation resistance and should be used in vacuum, hydrogen or inert atmospheres.
